You don't need a full renovation to transform a tired bathroom. These high-impact, lower-cost upgrades are where we'd start.
Re-grout and reseal first — it's the best value in bathrooms
Most 'old' bathrooms are really just grimy bathrooms. Fresh grout and new silicone completely change how a tiled room reads — the lines go from grey and stained to crisp and clean. Combined with a deep clean, a re-grout is often all a tired bathroom needs to look five years younger.
While we're in there, replacing worn towel rails, toilet roll holders and mirrors removes the small signs of age that your eye notices without consciously seeing.
Upgrade the things you touch every day
The tapware, shower head, towel rails and toilet seat are the bathroom's touch points. Modern matte-black or brushed-nickel fixtures instantly date-check a room — and they're a much smaller job than moving walls or replacing tile.
Installing a rainfall shower head and a mixer tap are plumbing fixture jobs we can often complete in a day. The difference in daily comfort is enormous for the cost.
When a full renovation is the better move
If the waterproofing is failing, the layout doesn't work, or the tiles and vanity are past saving, upgrading fixtures alone is money spent on a room you'll replace anyway. In that case a full bathroom renovation — waterproofing, tiling, vanity and fixtures done properly once — is the better investment.
