Re-Grouting vs Re-Tiling: Which Does Your Bathroom Actually Need?
Stained, cracked or missing grout doesn't always mean new tiles. Here's how to tell whether a re-grout will do the job — or whether it's time to retile.
Start with the condition of the tiles themselves
Grout fails long before tiles do. Grout is the softest part of a tiled surface, so staining, cracking and crumbling grout are often the first sign of wear — even when the tiles underneath are in perfectly good shape.
If your tiles are still firmly bonded, not cracked or chipped, and you're happy with the colour and style, a professional re-grout is usually the smart money. We rake out the old grout, re-grout with a suitable product for wet areas, and reseal the corners and joins with fresh silicone. The result looks close to a brand-new tiled wall or floor for a fraction of the cost of replacing it.
When tiles need replacing instead
There are times when re-grouting is a band-aid. If tiles are cracked, loose, or sound hollow when tapped, water is getting in behind them and the substrate may be damaged. Broken or drummy tiles should be replaced — and if the waterproofing beneath is compromised, a full re-tile is the only fix that will last.
The same applies if you simply don't like the tiles anymore. Re-grouting won't change the look of outdated tiles. If you're renovating the bathroom anyway, replacing the tiles and waterproofing at the same time avoids paying for the same surface twice.
The middle ground: targeted repairs
Many bathrooms need neither a full re-grout nor a full re-tile. Replacing a handful of cracked tiles and regrouting the rest can restore the room for years. Matching discontinued tiles isn't always possible, but a good tiler can usually find a close match or make a feature of the repair.
